Project Brief: As an environmentally concerned house owner, the client's brief was to modify her house to demonstrate how it is possible to live more sustainably. This involved alterations and an extension to the existing 1960's semi-detached house. The extension was built to reduce energy consumption and water consumption with natural, low carbon materials. The project won 'The Observer Ethical Award 2006'. Work undertaken, * Timber frame, cladding and shingles to new extension. * Lamb's wool insulation. * Solar thermal system contributed to space heating and domestic hot water. * Rainwater harvesting system. * Water saving appliances. * Low energy lighting. * Replacement, high insulation, timber framed windows. * Entrance porch acted as a draught lobby to collect solar energy. * Monitoring showed a 79% reduction in energy use when compared to pre-refurbishment levels.
